On June 3, 1892, the Board of Trade officially recognised the formation of a company named ‘Liverpool Football Club and Athletic Grounds Limited’.
The birth of LFC marked the end of a long and acrimonious dispute that saw a group of directors, including founder John Houlding, leave Everton in order to form a new club to play at Anfield.
That move was rubberstamped on this day 125 years ago.
A year-long celebration of this significant milestone begins today at Anfield, with the club set to host a special Red Neighbours party for children and pensioners before unveiling a giant birthday card signed by supporters from around the world.
Further events are planned for the Reds’ anniversary year, including a celebration match against Hertha BSC in the German capital on July 29, a special edition retail collection, activities to mark the date of the club’s first ever game, which took place on September 1, 1892, and much more.
Meanwhile, LFCTV and the club’s official website will run themed programmes and features across the 12 months, picking out the players, managers and matches that have made for a memorable 125 years
