During a highly distinguished Reds career he was a shining example of everything that is good about the game.
One of football’s true gentleman, he was booked just once in 857 Liverpool games and was the only player to survive the club’s fairytale journey from life as a mediocre Second Division outfit to the lofty summit of European football.
Along the way, he won almost every honour possible and the highest respect from everyone he came into contact with.
A 17-year-old debutant in 1960, his career can be distinctly divided into two sections. First as a raiding right winger who won domestic league and cup honours in the 60s; then as an intelligent, maturing, central midfielder who helped Liverpool conquer Europe in the 70s.
When he eventually left, aged 35, in 1978, he did so as the same affable individual who had joined the club all those years before but with an envious medal collection, a glowing reputation and a total number of appearances that is unlikely to ever be surpassed.
