Walking Football aims to encourage physical activity in a fun and social setting. Two-time European Cup winner, Alan, joined more than 50 participants who took part in the initiative’s first session.
Alan said: “It’s been a great experience – a really, really good day.
“Some of the guys here haven’t played for a long time, and some of them haven’t played at any level before, so it’s brilliant to get them all out here together.
“It’s great fun and allows these men to mix with new people, have a good time and realise that they can stay fit and still play the game at this level.”
The sessions, which are part funded by the FA as part of the Community Shield Fund, will run at the ASCC on a monthly basis until the end of the year.
Participant Allan Cannon, aged 64, said: “It’s been absolutely excellent. This is exactly what’s needed for people of our age.
“To have something inclusive like this, for people with all abilities, is fantastic. The camaraderie is brilliant and it’s great for our well-being - physically and mentally.
“Some guys our age don’t do any physical activity anymore, so it’s the perfect programme to get them involved again.”
68-year-old Dave Dando added: “I loved it. I haven’t played for longer than I’d care to admit, but I really enjoyed getting back out there.
“It’s a fantastic idea and encourages everyone to get involved. I’m really looking forward to the next session and seeing the initiative grow.”
The Red Neighbours programme supports local residents and schools in the Anfield community, focusing on four key areas: food poverty and education; support for the elderly community; encouraging a physically active community; and creating memorable experiences for young people.
