The Show Racism the Red Card event, one of 40 held at different clubs throughout the season, saw the players join former professional footballer Howard Gayle to educate young people on the dangers of racism.
More than 100 pupils from local schools were invited to the Reds’ stadium to take part in a range of anti-racism workshops, engage in a Q&A with the panel, and enjoy a screening of Show Racism the Red Card’s educational film.
Wijnaldum said: “It’s so important that youngsters understand the importance of reporting racism – whether they experience it or witness it – to someone they trust such as a teacher, parent or family member.”
Ged Grebby, the organisation’s chief executive, said: “Show Racism the Red Card has a great relationship with Liverpool Football Club and they have continued to show great support for the campaign season after season.
“Each year, the club shows its commitment to making Liverpool FC – and Anfield – a welcoming and inclusive environment.”
Show Racism the Red Card was established more than 20 years ago and uses the high profile of professional footballers to promote their strong anti-racism message to young people.
Having started with just one patron – Shaka Hislop – the charity now enjoys the support of many footballing legends, with patrons including John Barnes, Sir Bobby Robson, Ryan Giggs and Gary Lineker.
