Launched in March, the Unity is Strength Emergency Foodbank Appeal was set up to support the Trussell Trust’s foodbank networks in Liverpool and Merseyside, which provide emergency assistance to people living in food poverty.
Each Saturday at 3pm – between May 2 and May 23 – an LFC Lotto draw will take place, with prizes ranging from a cash amount to signed shirts from Reds stars Virgil van Dijk, Jordan Henderson, Alisson Becker and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain.
The lucky winner will receive 50 per cent of the total amount raised and the remaining 50 per cent will be split between the Emergency Foodbank Appeal and LFC Foundation.
This follows the club’s £40,000 donation to Fans Supporting Foodbanks – a scheme that supports the North Liverpool Foodbank, which has been impacted due to matchday collections ceasing as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic and subsequent suspension of the Premier League.
The club has taken many steps to continue its support of the North Liverpool Foodbank, which usually receives up to 25 per cent of its donations from matchday collections at Anfield and Goodison Park.
As well as donations and raising funds, staff from LFC and LFC Foundation have also been offering further support to the cause by packing emergency food parcels at the central foodbank hub in Anfield and distributing food throughout this difficult time.
Matt Parish, LFC Foundation director, said: “With the suspension of Premier League fixtures, it is extremely important that we continue our support for those at a loss from our postponed matchday foodbank collections.
“Now more than ever, we must continue to support those in need. We hope this fundraising initiative will contribute to providing much-needed help to local people and families living in food poverty and feeling the strain due to the current pandemic.”
