King Kenny at 70: Dalglish's Liverpool legacy in numbers

To celebrate Sir Kenny Dalglish's 70th birthday, we have taken a look back through the numbers behind his incredible contributions to Liverpool FC.

During a hugely successful stint as a player and two spells as manager, the Scot helped secure eight league titles, three European Cups, two FA Cups and five League Cups.

Little wonder he became known, and revered, as The King.

Player

440,000 – pounds paid by Liverpool to secure his signature from Glasgow Celtic in August 1977

515 – appearances in his Reds career, making him one of only 13 players to have played more than 500 games for the club

172 – goals scored for Liverpool in league and cup. He is seventh on the club’s all-time list

153 – Kenny played in 153 cup ties for the Reds, with the most in any competition his 59 appearances in the League Cup

147 – Dalglish has worn the iconic No.7 shirt for the club in more consecutive league games than any other Liverpool player

139 – he scored 139 goals under Bob Paisley, the most by any Reds player in that spell (from 1977 to 1983)

104 – Kenny is one of only seven players to have scored more than 100 goals for the club at Anfield, his total reaching 104

55 – the number of different clubs he found the net against during his Liverpool career

31 – the most goals Dalglish scored in all competitions in a single season (1977-78)

28 – appearances against Arsenal was the most he made against any single club as a Reds player

11 – he scored 11 times against Manchester City, more than he did against any other club

7 – it took Kenny just seven minutes to open his account on his league debut, in the 1-1 draw at Middlesbrough in August 1977

5 – the number of seasons Dalglish was a league ever-present as a player, including in each of his first three campaigns

3 – hat-tricks he netted, with both of his league trebles coming against Manchester City

2 – he was twice voted Football Writers’ Player of the Year, in 1979 and 1983


Manager

2,586 – the total number of days Dalglish was a manager at Liverpool across both spells

732 – the total number of goals scored by the Reds during his time in the dugout

381 – the total number of games Kenny managed Liverpool for (280 of which came in the league)

185 – he won 185 of his first 300 matches in charge in all competitions; no Reds manager has ever won more

150 – Dalglish’s number of victories in his first 250 league games as boss, the most attained by any Liverpool manager

85 – the number of matches he took to record 50 league wins, the fewest games of any Reds manager in history

61 – the total number of fixtures he played in as player-manager

58.53 – percentage of wins as Liverpool manager overall, with more than 61 per cent coming during his first spell

35 – Kenny was 35 years old when he managed the Reds to a league and cup double in 1986

33 – players made their debut for the club under Dalglish, the last being Alexander Doni in April 2012

29 – league games the Reds went unbeaten from the start of the 1987-88 season with Kenny as player-manager

9 – his biggest league win as a manager saw Liverpool beat Crystal Palace 9-0 in the First Division in 1989, with eight different players on the scoresheet
