Jürgen Klopp explains five changes v Genk

A desire to introduce fresh legs led Jürgen Klopp to make five changes to his team for Liverpool’s Champions League tie at Genk.

Following their impressive performances as substitutes at Old Trafford last time out, Naby Keita and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain start in Belgium on Wednesday night, while Mohamed Salah is fit to return after an ankle injury.

James Milner and Dejan Lovren replace Trent Alexander-Arnold and Joel Matip - neither of whom travelled - in the European champions’ defence, with Klopp explaining the reasoning behind his selection to BT Sport pre-match.

“Hopefully a good game, but yeah, it was clear we needed fresh legs and wanted that and the boys showed up on the weekend,” the boss replied, to a question about what he is hoping to see from his midfield three at KRC Genk Arena.

“Obviously they are in good shape and we wanted to use that, and we don’t have to force Gini and Hendo through all the games. Mo, it was clear since Sunday that he’s able to play and he is completely fine.

“In the backline we had to do it so that’s all OK. So, all good. I like it. We didn’t think about how many changes there are, we only realised later that it’s five, but I still think we have a pretty good team on the pitch.”
