Klopp on 'difficult' Hertha win, fit-again Gomez and Robertson debut

Jürgen Klopp declared himself happy with Liverpool's performance during Saturday's 3-0 victory over Hertha BSC at the Olympiastadion.

Goals from Dominic Solanke, Georginio Wijnaldum and Mohamed Salah saw the Reds emerge triumphant in a match held to celebrate the 125th anniversaries of both clubs.

At his post-match press conference, Klopp explained why the game was particularly difficult for his players, lavished praise upon a fit-again Joe Gomez and reflected on Andy Robertson's debut for the club.

On LFC's intensity after a busy training schedule...

This is what I expect. We do it because we want that it feels difficult for the boys. That's not the only reason but we have to do a few things, that's what we did yesterday and also the day before. Today we had quite a long journey to come here: bus, plane, bus, hotel, bus, here - that's not what we usually do on a matchday but we wanted to have it more difficult. You could see after half an hour, someone took the charge off a little bit. The players thought it was already done and then Hertha came up again and it was more difficult for us, we were a little bit too late in different situations so they had moments. After 1-0, we could've conceded a goal but Simon [Mignolet] was there, we defended then with passion when organisation wasn't there anymore. I'm fine with it; as long as you win, that's the main thing. The second half, also, we scored just one goal but then we managed the game, that's very important, especially because the players want to show they can do it. It looked really mature, I'm happy with this.

On the understanding between Philippe Coutinho and Salah...

I think players like this understand each other. That's a good thing with players of this quality. The pass was nice and the finish was not too bad also.

On Divock Origi's withdrawal from the starting line-up...

He felt just a cramp, it was pretty much the same as what Dejan [Lovren] felt before the game and that's why we said, 'Thank you, no risk today'.

On the fit-again Gomez...

Last night I had another talk with him. When I came in, I saw him for 20 minutes playing in the U21 and then I saw the injury and I thought, 'Oh my God'. Everybody told me what a wonderful player he is, what a great talent and all that stuff. When he came back, he was injured, when he came back he was heavy - a lot of muscles where you don't need muscles if you don't want to go to the beach or whatever. We had to work on this and now he's back. He lost weight, he's really fit, he looks sharp, that's right. [There are] still things to improve - [his] heading was really good today but he can improve, he needs to be a little bit more aggressive. In the full-back position he is unbelievably important for us now because Clyne had no pre-season so far; Trent is a fantastic player but also just 18 and offensively he is probably ready but in defence he needs to improve a lot. We need these different options and it's good to have him back.

On debutant Robertson...

I think you could see exactly what he's good in and where he has to improve in 45 minutes. Speed, football-wise, he's flexible and good [with] crosses, that's really important. We are a dominant football team, or want to be a dominant football team, so we need players who can make the difference on the wing. He's good in defence but in one or two situations [he wasn't] but it's always like this. We left him alone, like we left Alberto Moreno alone in the first half, and then Hertha are too strong, they have too many options inside, outside, through the legs, whatever. He needs to improve but he's a really good boy with a lot of perspective. I'm happy to have him around.

On the team's encouraging development...

We are not where we want to be but in pre-season you have to work hard - especially in England, you have this one pre-season and then a long, long season. So in this moment it's good that everybody looks really positive, that's how it should be. The new players are maybe better than people thought they would be, that's how it is. I think we said it early, that we want to build on the quality of the squad from last year, that's what we've tried to do. At the moment, we're really happy but, in this moment, we don't have a lot of injuries, that's the best news. If we can stay fit, then we will be strong, that's how it is. Unfortunately, the other teams are also pretty strong in England, so we need to be.
