Iconic images: Liverpool's first league champions
Throughout LFC's 125th anniversary year, Liverpoolfc.com will retrace the club's history through the striking images that plot a fascinating journey. Second in the series is a team photograph of the Reds' first title-winning side.
On Monday April 29, 1901, Liverpool travelled to West Bromwich Albion for their final game of the season knowing that a draw would be enough to seal the club's maiden league championship.
An 11-game unbeaten run that began with a 1-0 win over title rivals Sunderland had seen Tom Watson's men reel in the north-east club at the top of the First Division table. If they could extend that streak to a dozen matches at The Hawthorns, the crown would be theirs.
As it turned out, they won 1-0 thanks to Johnny Walker's goal. Liverpool were champions of England for the first time, just shy of nine years after the club's formation in 1892.
Of course, 17 more top-flight titles have since been added to the club's roll of honour, but that day 116 years ago represents a milestone moment in the Anfield annals.
Above, Watson and his players are pictured with the trophy.
