The almost forgotten man of Bill Shankly’s fabled backroom team, Reuben Bennett’s value to the club was unquantifiable and he remains a legendary figure among all those who worked with him.

A tough, craggy Scot, he arrived at Anfield a year before Shanks, head-hunted for the role of chief coach by then-Liverpool chairman TV Williams.

A former goalkeeper who was highly-regarded as one of the finest coaches in Scotland, his capture was viewed as a major coup and over the course of the next two decades the Reds were to reap the rewards.

Famed for working the players vigorously on the training pitch, the former Army physical training instructor was an immensely popular figure among the players, who he kept entertained with tall tales of his youthful heroic deeds.

A dedicated and loyal servant of the club, he was perhaps closer to Shankly than any of the other Boot Room inhabitants, and would also often accompany the manager on his many successful scouting missions.
