50 Men Who Made LFC: TV Williams
The chairman who put Liverpool on the road to their most dominant spell of success, TV Williams was both an astute businessman and a footballing visionary.
A former postman and cotton broker, he was a proud Liverpudlian who had been a long-time shareholder before joining the board of directors in 1948.
He went on to serve the club for 28 years and was an inspirational figure in the shaping of its future. In the early 1950s, he instigated the move to purchase an unkempt school field in West Derby that now homes the club’s famous Melwood training base.
Williams then played a key role in bringing together Bob Paisley, Reuben Bennett and Joe Fagan – the three wise men who would play key roles in the legendary Boot Room dynasty.
His greatest legacy of all, though, was without doubt the appointment of Bill Shankly as manager in 1959; together they worked in tandem to drag Liverpool Football Club back to the top.
