Sheyi Ojo: USA tour has been a great experience
Sheyi Ojo believes Liverpool's experiences during their pre-season tour of the United States have left the squad in the best possible shape for the forthcoming campaign.
The 19-year-old found the net as Jürgen Klopp’s charges ended their time in America with a 2-1 defeat to AS Roma at the Busch Stadium in St. Louis – a game played in conditions approaching 90 degrees.
Despite the loss, Ojo insists there is many reasons to be optimistic following the three games against Chelsea, AC Milan and AS Roma.
“It was disappointing to lose the game but there are a lot of positives to take from the game and our time out here,” he told Liverpoolfc.com.
“It was very tough, very humid and the pitch wasn’t the best - but that’s not an excuse. We will assess the game and look forward to the next one.
“There have been a lot of positives to take from each game. The team have responded really well and everyone has got along well with each other and everyone is getting fitter which is the main thing. We are all looking forward to the start of the season now.”
Reflecting on his goal, which came from well-worked corner, Ojo added: “Dejan headed the ball across, I just assumed he was going to do that and luckily for me I was there to head it into the net.
“The most important thing is the team and everyone got fitter and we are getting stronger and looking forward to the new season.”
The Reds now turn their attentions to Saturday’s International Champions Cup tie with Barcelona at Wembley and a reunion with Kop hero Luis Suarez.
The former MK Dons youngster admits he would relish the chance to be involved against Lionel Messi and co but insisted he must keep working as hard as he can in training to impress the manager for that to happen.
He added: “It would be nice to play against a team like that but for me I’ve just to keep my head down and keep working hard in training and see what happens.”
