'The Beatles became part of the Kop culture'
The 1960s was a magical time for the city of Liverpool as Bill Shankly's Reds revolution began to take off and a young band by the name of The Beatles shot to stardom around the world.
As John, Paul, George and Ringo established themselves as musical masters, the football team from Anfield was setting about becoming a dominant force of their own kind.
In the midst of it all was the growing influence of the Kop, with its chorus of voices in place to support the club – and sing a tune when the moment arose.
“Merseybeat and Beatlemania all took off in the early ‘60s and at the time this city was abuzz,” explains the voice of Anfield, George Sephton, in the new LFCTV documentary This Is Anfield.
“It was the centre of the universe as far as we were concerned.
“The Kop took Merseybeat to its heart and it all became part of the Kop culture.”
This Is Anfield – an hour-long film telling the entire story of Liverpool’s world-famous home – premieres at 8pm BST this Sunday on LFCTV and LFCTV GO…
