Tottenham arrived on Merseyside in September 1978 with World Cup-winners Ossie Ardiles and Ricky Villa in their ranks, seeking a first win at Anfield since 1912. They left on the wrong end of a 7-0 thrashing, having been completely outclassed from start to finish.

The game is often remembered for manager Bob Paisley's quote that Terry McDermott's header "must be the best goal Anfield has ever seen", but it was Kenny Dalglish who set the Reds on the road to a thrilling victory, scoring the first two goals and having a hand in two more.

The striker had found the net in each of Liverpool's first three matches of the season (all victories) and it took Dalglish just eight minutes to open the scoring against Spurs. The No.7 turned a low shot under goalkeeper Barry Danes to make it 1-0 and then deflected a wayward effort from Jimmy Case inside the post for his second.

Ray Kennedy headed in the third on 28 minutes. Substitute David Johnson scored after Dalglish's saved shot rebounded to him and the same duo combined to make it 5-0 when Johnson slotted past Danes after latching onto a wonderful through ball from Kenny.

Phil Neal made it 6-0 from the penalty spot ... and then came THE goal from McDermott to cap a sweeping attack from the Reds.

Dalglish, collecting the ball from the defence, passed to Johnson on the halfway line. The forward pinged it out to the left flank, where Steve Heighway crossed with his first touch for McDermott, who had raced forward from his own box to power home a header. Breathtaking.
