Arsenal captain Robin van Persie has warned his teammates to beware the threat of Andy Carroll this weekend as he compared the Liverpool striker's style to that of Alan Shearer.

The Reds' No.9 scored a winning goal against the Gunners at the Emirates last season for Newcastle United to leave Arsene Wenger's men in no doubt of the danger he poses to opposition defences.

"He's very strong and reminds me of Alan Shearer in style - holding the ball well, heading it strongly, moving nicely and looking lively in the box," said Van Persie.

"We've seen what Carroll can do before - he scored the winner here for Newcastle last season. We'll need to be on our guard against him."

Van Persie added: "I rate them (Liverpool) as title contenders every year, and they look strong this time around. You can only look forward to games like these."
