In an interview with Match of the Day magazine, Stewart Downing lifted the lid on life as a Liverpool player. Here's what our new winger had to say...

Downing on his best position...

I don't mind playing on the left or the right wing, which is probably a good strength. If I'm out wide, I will try my best to set up some goals and chip in with a few myself. Fans come to be entertained and hopefully we can do that this season.

Downing on linking up with Andy Carroll...

I can see the reasons why Andy Carroll and I will strike up a good relationship - I'm good at crossing and Andy's good at getting on the end of crosses! Andy is a top player. I know his strengths and I'll have to try and play to them.

Downing on playing at Anfield...

When you come to Anfield as an opposing player you look around, hear the crowd and think 'I'd love to play here'. Aston Villa's a wonderful club, but when Liverpool come calling you can't turn them down.

Downing on his Liverpool targets...

Winning as many trophies as possible would be perfect. The long-term target is to win the Premier League. That doesn't happen overnight. You have to build towards it and this may be the start with the players Kenny has brought in.

Downing on dressing-room morale...

Speaking to the lads that have been here a few years - like Jamie Carragher and Pepe Reina - they tell me you can sense the atmosphere has improve here. The fans have got their buzz back.
