John Aldridge believes Craig Bellamy could prove to be the bargain buy of the summer.

The ex-Red was impressed by the Welshman's cameo in Saturday's defeat at Stoke City and feels he will be an invaluable attacking asset for Kenny Dalglish's side this season.

"I thought Bellamy was brilliant when he came on at Stoke and in the last 25 minutes he was the best player on the park," said Aldridge.

"He was lively, direct, didn't give the ball away and caused Stoke a lot of problems on the left hand side.

"Bellamy's performance will have certainly given Kenny Dalglish food for thought.

"With Stewart Downing on the right and Bellamy on the left we looked good and really pinned Stoke back.

"Bellamy could prove to be the bargain buy of the summer."

Aldridge has also been delighted by Daniel Agger's start to the season.

"I thought Daniel Agger was excellent once again at Stoke," said Aldridge.

"The defender has been in fine form so far this season and has hardly put a foot wrong.

"When he was flattened by Andy Wilkinson during Saturday's game I feared the worst.

"Agger has been so unlucky with injuries over the years but thankfully he was soon back on his feet.

"He's so comfortable on the ball and uses possession intelligently.

"If Agger can stay fit he's going to a massive player for us this season as he is a top class centre-back."
