Liverpool are hoping to make it a double success in cup clashes with Brighton after beating the Seagulls in their last meeting back in 1991.

After a 2-2 draw in the FA Cup 4th round, Kenny Dalglish's side beat Brighton 3-2 after extra-time in the replay. It was the last Cup tie Kenny Dalglish won as Reds boss in his first spell in charge.

The clubs met in the League Cup in October 1985 with Liverpool winning 4-0 in the 3rd Round at Anfield. In the game Paul Walsh scored a hat-trick, the Reds 3rd in the competition with Kenny Dalglish completing the scoring.

Liverpool have won this trophy on a record seven occasions, the last being in 2003.

They have also appeared in the most Finals - 10.

Liverpool reached this stage by winning 3-1 at Exeter in Round two with goals from Luis Suarez, Maxi and Andy Carroll.

In that game nine players made their League Cup debut for the club while Raul Meireles played his last game for the Reds.

Liverpool have failed to score in only one of the last 39 matches in the League Cup - when they lost 2-0 at Chelsea in 2007.

The Reds have been involved in five League Cup penalty shoot-outs winning three and losing two.

In major competitive games the Liverpool have won 10 of the 12 penalty shoot-outs.

The Reds biggest away win in the competition came at Stoke (8-0) in November 2000. The second best was the 6-0 at Exeter in October 1981.

Liverpool have scored 14 hat-tricks in this competition with the last coming from Fernando Torres at Reading in a 4-2 win in September 2007.

Liverpool have been eliminated eight times by lower-Division teams in this competition. The last time Liverpool failed to score in 3 successive games under Kenny Dalglish came in February 1987.

Steven Gerrard has missed the last 17 Liverpool games - his longest spell of inactivity. His last appearance came in the 3-1 win over Manchester United at Anfield back in March. He has played only six times under Kenny Dalglish.

Brighton moved into their new ground, the American Express Community Stadium, in the summer and are unbeaten in five matches there - winning four and drawing the other.

They have reached this stage of the Carling Cup by winning two home games 1-0. They defeated Gillingham in Round One with Ashley Barnes scoring a penalty and defeated Premier League Sunderland in extra-time thanks to a Craig Mackail-Smith goal.

Brighton achieved the rare feat of claiming wins against Liverpool in three consecutive seasons in the 1980's - 1-0 in the league at Anfield in March 1982 and then in successive FA Cup campaigns.

The 'Seagulls' best season in the League Cup was in 1979 when they reached the 5th round before losing to eventual winners Nottingham Forest. Mark Lawrenson was in the Brighton team.

In 1983 Brighton reached the FA Cup Final, losing to Manchester United in a replay, after eliminating Liverpool en route. Former Red Jimmy Melia managed Albion while Jimmy Case was in the starting XI.

Last season Brighton won League One losing only seven of their 46 games. Glenn Murray hit 22 league goals but has since left the club - joining Crystal Palace in the summer.

From January they won 18 and drew two of 22 games on the way to lifting the title before failing to secure a win in the last four fixtures.

Ashley Barnes scored 20 goals for Brighton last season - netting in five of the last six games. He is leading scorer this season with five.

Last season Brighton and Liverpool were both knocked out of the League Cup by Northampton.

They suffered their first defeat of the campaign last Saturday - going down 1-0 at Leicester. They had not lost in the eight games prior to that. It was also the first time they had failed to trouble the scorers.

They are currently third in the Championship - two points behind leaders Southampton.

In the transfer window they signed Spanish international Vicente who spent 11 years with Valencia before moving to England.

Craig Mackail-Smith has been capped twice by Scotland. He was League One's Player Of  the Year last season while at Peterborough.

Alan Navarro was a junior player at Liverpool before joining Tranmere and Chester amongst others.

Craig Noone is another Scouser in the squad, and played for Skelmersdale, Burscough and Southport before playing in the Football League with Plymouth and Exeter.

Goalkeeper Casper Ankergren was an unused substitute for Leeds against Liverpool in this competition two years ago.

Manager Gus Poyet was a losing finalist in this competition in 2001-02. He played in the Tottenham team beaten 2-1 by Blackburn Rovers.
