Lucas Leiva is confident Liverpool's season is 'back on track' following Saturday's 2-1 triumph over Wolves.

The Reds ended a run of two straight league defeats thanks to an own goal from Roger Johnson and a sublime individual effort from Luis Suarez.

The Brazilian admits it was vital that his teammates returned to winning ways against Mick McCarthy's men and is now targeting further improvement in the weeks ahead.

"It was an important win," Lucas said.

"It was a heavy defeat at Spurs, so it was important to win in the Carling Cup and get three points in the Barclays Premier League which gives us the chance to be closer to the top four.

"We spoke before the game against Brighton. We needed to win, get back on track, go into the next round and come into this game with confidence - and to win too. That is what happened."

Liverpool stormed into a two-goal lead at home to the Wanderers before seeing their advantage cut by a second-half strike from Steven Fletcher.

Lucas concedes that the Reds found the going tough against the Black Country outfit but reckons they created more than enough chances to have added to their first-half tally.

"It was a tough game and we had plenty of chances but only took two," added Lucas.

"It is hard when you concede a goal early in the second half. We tried to control the game and I think we managed well.

"I think sometimes we are a bit unlucky; we twice hit the post and there were a couple of saves by the 'keeper but that means we are creating chances.

"If we can score more goals it will be good but it was an important win."
