Steve Clarke claims the team that retains most control will prevail in this weekend's Merseyside derby.

The first-team coach believes the key to beating Everton is to compete - especially in a derby match.

But he thinks keeping an 'ice cold mind' is vital if Liverpool are to gain another three points against their neighbours.

"When you play Everton, the first thing you're going to have to do is compete with them," Clarke told Liverpoolfc.tv. "They work really hard in every game, they make it difficult for the opposition.

"They've got their own way of playing. At home, it's a tight ground, a tight stadium.

"You have to go into the game with passion but with a calm mind as well. You need a lot of fire in your belly but an ice-cold mind.

"You have to try and control the game as much as you can. The passion and the atmosphere can carry you away in a local derby but the team that holds most control in the derby will be the team that wins it.

"I've never experienced a Merseyside derby at Goodison so I'm looking forward to that."
