Help support World Sight Day
Today is World Sight Day - and to mark the occasion Standard Chartered, Liverpool FC's main sponsor, will continue the drive to eliminate avoidable blindness by matching EVERY donation made to its Seeing is Believing project.
It's estimated there are 39 million blind people globally. However, a staggering 80 per cent of blindness can be prevented or treated.
In addition, a large majority of avoidable blindness occurs in poorer countries with limited access to eye-care services and without effective intervention, it's believed the number of blind people worldwide will increase to 76 million by the year 2020.
It's estimated blindness leads to an annual loss of $200 billion in economic productivity around the globe as many blind or visually impaired people don't have the chance to work or support their families.
Standard Chartered is committed to helping tackle the problem - and it's calling on fans to donate. Just £10 buys a pair of glasses for a child or for £17 pays for an adult cataract operation, restoring someone's sight. Your donation could go towards helping a child see the blackboard with a pair of glasses or having sight restoring surgery.
Since the programme's launch in 2003, the Bank has raised US$37million and recently extended its commitment to Seeing is Believing by announcing plans to raise a further US$63m by 2020 - making it a US$100million commitment.
To promote the work being done by Seeing is Believing and the problem of blindness and visual impairment around the world, a series of activities will take place at Anfield during half-time at Saturday's clash with Manchester United.
Four children from the local community will take part in a penalty shootout at the Kop end against the Seeing is Believing mascot, Sir SiB.
