Kenny Dalglish predicts that Steven Gerrard will be Liverpool's talisman for many years to come - quipping that our inspirational skipper is not using a Zimmer frame yet.

The 31-year-old will hope to return to the Liverpool XI on Saturday lunchtime against the side he helped slay on his last Reds start back in March - Manchester United.

Groin surgery has resulted in the longest injury lay-off of an illustrious career which has already included 559 LFC appearances, 140 club goals, 89 international caps and 10 senior trophies.

But Dalglish thinks Gerrard will come back stronger than ever.

"Steven has been fantastic for the club and everybody would want him to go on for as long as he could because he has always been a fabulous asset," said the gaffer.

"Long may it continue. I haven't got a crystal ball, I don't know how long he has left, maybe once he gets back into the swing of things he will have a better idea himself.

"Steven has made a huge contribution to this club and he isn't going to change. He's probably fitter now than he was before.

"He's not in a Zimmer! When he plays, you'll still see him charging forward. He did that against Wolves the other week when he came on.

"I don't think our philosophy and how we go about our job will change with Steven coming back. The principles and beliefs will be the same, they don't change because of one player.

"There's no-one in our squad who can't play beside Steven. We understand what he can do and he understands what the other players can do. They haven't played together an awful lot but they have trained together a lot."

Despite entering their 30s, both Gerrard and teammate Jamie Carragher remain integral parts of the current Liverpool team.

Dalglish claims form and not age will dictate how long this remains the case.

"Both Steven and Carra are people who everybody else can look up to," he said. "Anybody who is an asset to the football club I am sure we will look forward to keeping.

"For me, you judge a player on what they are doing on the pitch. It doesn't matter what their age is."
