Steve Clarke believes tonight's friendly clash with Rangers will provide Liverpool's youngsters with an authentic experience of what it's like to compete in European football.

The Reds take on the Scottish giants at Ibrox in a game you can watch exclusively live on LFC TV Online.

Clarke is anticipating a competitive contest in Glasgow - and one which will be of great benefit to Liverpool's up-and-coming stars.

The first-team coach told Liverpoolfc.tv: "Rangers have had a good start to the season. Any time you go to play one of the two big Glasgow teams, Rangers or Celtic, you expect a difficult game - and I'm sure this game at Ibrox will be no exception to that.

"Hopefully they'll get a good crowd in for the match - and if they do then the atmosphere will be quite hostile. It's a good learning process for the younger players who maybe haven't experienced that much European football.

"If we can get them some time on the pitch I think that will be very beneficial for them in the future."

He added: "It's a match that can be treated like a European trip. Obviously we're all disappointed that we're not involved in Europe this year, but we're hopeful that in years to come we will be involved in Europe so it's important to try and get some experience into the younger players."

Clarke has plenty of experience of playing at Ibrox himself from his days at St Mirren - and he's looking forward to returning north of the border with Liverpool.

"It's always nice to go back to Scotland and see some old friends," he said. "Although it's a friendly game, it'll have that little competitive edge because it's Scotland against England - Liverpool against Rangers is something of a 'glamour tie'."
