Lucas Leiva revealed his joy at captaining Liverpool in Tuesday's friendly with Rangers - and remained adamant there are positives to be taken from the trip to Ibrox despite a 1-0 defeat.

Lee McCulloch netted the only goal of the game after 20 minutes, but the Reds were able to give run outs to fit-again trio Glen Johnson, Daniel Agger and Fabio Aurelio.

It was also a night to remember for Lucas, who skippered Liverpool from the start of the contest for the first time in his Anfield career.

He told Liverpoolfc.tv: "It was special for me. I am still young and haven't had the chance to be a captain.

"Of course I would have liked another result to have a better record, but I am really proud to have been the captain. It means a lot to me at such a big club like Liverpool."

He added: "We are disappointed with the result, of course. We wanted to win.

"But we saw a few players coming back from injury like Fabio, Glen and Agger. They are getting their fitness back so it was important for this game. Now we will concentrate on the Barclays Premier League."

Liverpool return to action on Saturday when they play host to Norwich City at Anfield - though Lucas will be forced to watch from the sidelines due to suspension.

Nonetheless, he's confident the Reds can build on their impressive showing against Manchester United last weekend and clinch three points.

"Unfortunately I will be out of the game because I am suspended, but I will be cheering the players on," he said. "I think we deserved to win against Manchester United.

"We played really well and now we have to take the positives into the next game, hopefully get the three points and be closer to the top four."

He continued: "I think there is more to come (from Liverpool). There are a lot of new players that came in over the summer and it always takes time to settle and build an understanding between the players.

"I think there is a lot to come and hopefully it will be a successful season for us."
