Stewart Downing has tipped fellow left sider Jose Enrique to earn a Spain call-up.

Despite representing his country at U16, U20 and U21 level, Enrique is still waiting for his first taste of senior international football.

His form for Liverpool since signing from Newcastle has convinced Downing for one that this should change - and the winger hopes to be on the pitch with his clubmate when England take on Spain later this month.

"Jose is a talented player and has done very well since he's come here," Downing said.

"He must have a great chance of getting in the Spain squad and maybe he will be lining up against England.

"I enjoy playing alongside him and I think you can see we're gelling as a team."

Downing has made 11 appearances for Liverpool since switching from Villa Park this summer but is still waiting for his first goal.

The England man hit the post in our 2-0 win over West Brom on Saturday - the second time he has been denied by the woodwork this term

"I think I've hit every part of the goal apart from the net so far," he said. "It was unlucky. But the pleasing thing is that we won and that's the main thing.

"We played some good stuff and the manager is happy with us winning but I'm sure he would like to see us killing teams off better than we are."
