Jamie Carragher has saluted the goalscoring impact of Maxi Rodriguez after the Argentine maintained his prolific run with another strike in the Carling Cup win at Chelsea.

The No. 11 took his tally to 10 goals in his last nine starts at Stamford Bridge, repeating the heroics that saw him net in the league meeting just nine days earlier.

Carragher is unsurprised by the midfielder's contribution, pointing to a glittering career as proof of his pedigree.

"Maxi is a top player," Carragher said. "He probably doesn't play as often as he would maybe like but whenever he comes in he does a great job.

"We're talking about a top international who has played in World Cups."

The Reds will now face Manchester City in the last four of the competition after overcoming Andre Villas-Boas's side and Carra reckons Liverpool were well worth their victory.

"I think it's fair to say we deserved it," he said.

"We missed a penalty as well and I don't think our 'keeper had too many saves to make.

"It's a competition we've taken very seriously from the start. You could see that with the team the manager put out."
