Last season at Wigan the sides drew 1-1. Fernando Torres scored after seven minutes with Hugo Rodallega equalising seven minutes into the second half.

In the return the sides once again played out a 1-1 draw. Again Wigan equalised, this time through Steve Gohouri after Raul Meireles had opened the scoring with his fifth goal in six games.

It was the first time both games in a season between the sides had ended in a draw.
