Generous Liverpool fans who bid for signed Liverpool shirts have raised an incredible £20,669.10 for the Royal British Legion.

Home jerseys that were worn during the game against Swansea City at Anfield on November 5, 2011, were signed by Reds stars and auctioned for charity.

The funds raised as part of The Poppy Appeal will be used to help those in the armed forces recover after injury or retrain for the transition to civilian life.

No expense was spared by supporters as they splashed out more than three-times last year's combined amount, which was £6,000.

Luis Suarez was the most in demand - his top going for £1,603.03 while Jordan Henderson's jersey was snapped up for £1,370.00 and Andy Carroll's for £1,270.00.

As well as match day collections, extra advertising space in programmes and perimeter adverts, Liverpool Football Club donated the signed kit to the Royal British Legion as part of the week leading up to Remembrance Sunday.

On December 9, Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard presented members of the armed forces, with the jerseys at Melwood.

Gerrard said: "It was an honour for the lads to wear the poppy on our home shirts and donate them to the Royal British Legion to raise funds for the Poppy Appeal.

"We'd like to thank all of our fans in the armed forces for the amazing work they do."

Supporters also bid big for shirts worn and signed by midfielders Lucas Leiva and Charlie Adam whose jerseys were sold for £1,250.00 and £1,120.00 respectively.

Bill Martin, County Secretary RBL Merseyside & West Lancs said: "The support that we receive each year from LFC is heart-warming and the donation of shirts alone enabled us to raise over £20,000 - which will be very much appreciated by all those who will ultimately benefit.

"On behalf of them I would like to give our very sincere thanks to the team, all at LFC, the supporters and the public, who so generously support the Poppy Appeal each year."
