Spearing salutes Carroll display
Jay Spearing today paid tribute to Andy Carroll's excellent performance and goal in Tuesday night's 3-0 victory at Wolverhampton Wanderers – and insisted it demonstrated exactly what damage the 23-year-old is capable of doing to opposition defences.
The No.9 opened the scoring for the Reds in the early stages of the second half at Molineux to send them on their way to a resounding win in the Midlands.
It capped an impressive all-round display from Carroll, and Spearing is confident the striker can maintain that sort of form over the coming weeks.
"From the moment he signed, we've seen Andy's quality," said Spearing, who returned to the team following injury.
"Tonight he showed exactly what he is capable of doing for this club.
"Hopefully he can carry on and keep doing that until the end of the season.
"Andy can cause all sorts of problems in the air but he's also great with his feet as you've seen with some of the turns he does and his finish for that goal."
The victory over Wolves came on the back of two impressive cup results over Manchester City and Manchester United at Anfield.
It was enough to move Liverpool up to fifth place in the Barclays Premier League table, and Spearing acknowledged it was crucial the Reds collected the three points.
He added: "After the week we had we knew we had to come here and do exactly the same. We couldn't see Wolves as anything different, it's a Premier League game and we wanted to get three points.
"Right from the off we showed what we were capable of doing and caused them a lot of problems.
"In the second half we caused them more problems and got the three goals.
"Playing Manchester City and Manchester United and coming out with two brilliant results which were thoroughly deserved gave us all a massive confidence boost
"But we came here, didn't take our foot off the gas and proved what we are all about.
"We've got to take each game as it comes and aim towards that top four."
