And Steven Gerrard got Gerard Houllier's men off to a great start, finding the back of the net with a 25-yard strike that took a deflection off David Beckham six minutes before the break.
United piled on the pressure in the second half, but Jerzy Dudek rose to the fore, producing a string of fine saves to thwart United.
Michael Owen secured the win on 86 minutes, racing through to fire beyond Fabien Barthez in front of a delighted travelling Kop.
