'I was surprised it wasn't Stevie'
Dirk Kuyt was surprised to see Steven Gerrard not wearing the captain's armband for England on Wednesday night.
Kuyt helped Holland record a 3-2 victory at Wembley on an evening when interim England boss Stuart Pearce selected Scott Parker as his skipper.
"For me, Stevie is the main one for the England team to be the captain," said the Dutchman.
"On and off the pitch he is such a personality. Of course, it is up to the manager of England who makes the decision. But in my eyes he is the main one. He is the perfect leader for Liverpool and the perfect leader for the England team."
Gerrard, who has captained his country many times in amassing 90 caps, was typically supportive of Parker.
The Tottenham midfielder explained: "He said that I deserved it and that he'd support me.
"He was pleased for me and I wouldn't expect anything less."
