Spearing: I want the Blues
Jay Spearing knows exactly who he wants to line-up against at Wembley next month and that is the side from across Stanley Park.
The local-born lad is no stranger to the rivalry between Liverpool and Everton and he's hoping that, come the middle of next month, the streets of the capital will be awash with the colours of the two Merseyside rivals.
"I'd like to face the blue side of Merseyside," Spearing told the Liverpool Echo. "For me personally it would be extra special if it was the Blues. For both clubs it would be massive to get the supporters down there.
"But whoever gets through, it's going to be a difficult game. This club wants to be playing at Wembley as often as it possibly can. We want to win and get back there again for the final."
Spearing was in fine form as Steven Gerrard put three past the neighbours in last Tuesday's Merseyside derby.
The No.20 was at the heart of the action, demanding the ball to feet, always keen to instigate another Liverpool attack with a forward pass.
And the 23-year-old was his consistent self against Stoke in the FA Cup quarter-final on Sunday afternoon. So much so, the Kop recognised his efforts and sung his name.
"To hear that from the supporters, I was made up," Spearing said. "It's something I've always dreamed about from when I was growing up and coming through at the Academy.
"Every game I play alongside Steven Gerrard is a massive confidence boost for myself. I'm just trying to show what I'm all about."
Spearing was an unused substitute when the Reds clinched the Carling Cup at Wembley in February and he admits that watching from the sidelines wasn't easy.
"From a personal point of view it was a bit of a disappointment not playing in the Carling Cup final but it's a squad game," he said. "Just to be part of the squad was special but the extra bonus would be to get on that pitch.
"Hopefully when we go back to Wembley this time, I can get us through to the final. We won the Carling Cup and now we want to get to another final and lift some more silverware.
"A trophy brings a lot of confidence to the club. Now we've had a taste of it we want more."
QPR await Kenny Dalglish's men on Wednesday night and Spearing remains confident the Reds can push the sides above them right to the wire in the Barclays Premier League.
But for that to be achievable, he knows Liverpool will have to put dreams of another Wembley final to one side and make sure they take each game as it comes.
"The FA Cup has to be put to one side because we've got a massive game on Wednesday night," said Spearing.
"There's a long way to go in the league. We need to pick up as many points as possible and put pressure on the teams above us. If we keep winning and they drop points then anything can happen."
