Kenny Dalglish today spoke of his delight at news Fabrice Muamba has taken positive steps towards recovery as he revealed measures are in place to ensure Liverpool's players are thoroughly checked for any potential heart defects.

Muamba was rushed to hospital on Saturday night after collapsing during Bolton's FA Cup quarter-final clash against Tottenham at White Hart Lane and messages of support for the young star have been widespread in the days since.

Speaking at Melwood, Dalglish expressed his relief at the England U21 international's improved condition and explained to reporters gathered at the club's training complex how his players are monitored.

"We've already got our own procedures in place. Every one of our players has been scanned," said the manager. "Usually [every] two years. Everybody that is signed is scanned. Whether it's players coming in for the first team or whether it's a 17-year-old kid that's signed up, we scan them.

"There's always a chance that despite the scanning and the expertise of the people that read them, there's going to be something missing. But we can only try our best and I think we've done pretty well and we're pretty up to date with that.

"I think the most important thing in all of this is a little bit of positive news coming out about Fabrice overnight. It's been a long journey for him but the first positive steps have been taken.

"Everybody's got to show their support for the boy and I'm sure he knows everybody's fully behind him and wishing and hoping he does recover."

Meanwhile, Dalglish confirmed Craig Bellamy is a doubt for Liverpool's trip to Queens Park Rangers on Wednesday while Glen Johnson is set to miss out once more. The boss will fully assess the fitness of his squad following training today.
