Fan of the Month revealed
Birmingham based Liverpool supporter Steve McLaren has today been named Standard Chartered Fan of the Month for February.
A long standing member of the Liverpool Disabled Supporters Association, Steve was nominated for the award by LDSA liaison officer Colin McCall.
"Steve was born in Bootle and moved to Birmingham when he was a youngster. Steven used to go the game when he lived in Liverpool but cannot go now due to travelling long distances on a regular basis in his wheelchair," explains Colin.
"Steven does make it to Liverpool twice a year for their annual Player of the Season awards and their Christmas Gala dinner. Steven's life revolves around Liverpool. He has written a book on the history of the club since 1982.
"Steven has had a profound effect on the LDSA and all club staff who he has come into contact with and all say he is the biggest Liverpool fan they have met.
"I was a season ticket holder for 10 years and travelled all over Europe to watch the Reds and in my time I have never come across a fan who is as knowledgeable, passionate and whose life depends on Liverpool so much. I don't want to focus on Steve's disability but for someone who has a daily struggle with his mobility I find this man even more remarkable.
"My words cannot explain what this man is like - but the below video, filmed at the LDSA Christmas Gala dinner, will."
Steve's nomination won the overwhelming backing of our judging panel this month.
Ian Rush said: "It's very encouraging to read of Steve's passion for LFC despite his disability. He deserves to be on the club's website, allowing other fans to see how amazing he is. His dedication in taking the time to write a book on the modern history of the Club will no doubt be an interesting read as well."
Gavin Laws from Standard Chartered added: "He doesn't let his disability get in the way of his support for his team. He is an inspiration to many."
On behalf of everybody at Liverpool Football Club and Standard Chartered, we'd like to congratulate Steve on being crowned Fan of the Month for February.
