Alan Kennedy is hoping Steven Gerrard can continue his great record of firing memorable goals at St James' Park when Liverpool travel to Newcastle United on Sunday.

The No.8 has been a constant menace to the Toon Army and struck on north-east turf in March 2006, November 2007 and December 2008.

The skipper also came off the bench to inspire the Reds to victory over Alan Pardew's side in the final game of 2011 at Anfield, and Kennedy has backed him to impress again on Sunday.

"St James' Park is a particularly a good hunting ground for Steven Gerrard," Kennedy told Liverpoolfc.tv.

"He has scored some spectacular goals at St James' Park in the past and hopefully he can do the same on Sunday."

Kennedy played in the black and white shirt for Newcastle against Liverpool in the 1974 FA Cup final at Wembley, but it was at Anfield where he became a legend after netting winning goals in two European Cup finals - the second from a penalty in the 1984 shootout against AS Roma.

He added: "It's a massive game. I'm not sure how to take this one as it's my two former clubs, but I always want Liverpool to do well.

"They have a pretty decent record up at Newcastle, but to be fair to Alan Pardew's side they are on a high at the moment and sitting nicely in the league. If they were to beat Liverpool they would have a chance of getting into the top four.

"At the start of the season they would have settled for anything in the top 10 or 12 but they are a lot higher than that and they look like a team that is growing in confidence.

"For Liverpool it has been a disappointing last three to four weeks in the league and we haven't played our best football, especially at home where we have lost a couple of games that we shouldn't have done.

"We went down to QPR, went 2-0 up and looked comfortable but they went and scored three late goals and that took the gloss of our good performance somewhat.

"Liverpool have got to get back to winning ways. Kenny has got to get himself back into the frame of making sure they don't concede silly goals. That has been the key to the recent form as they've given away silly goals and there's no point scoring two if you're going to concede three.

"That's the key to everything and they have to do it as a team rather than as individuals."

Kennedy believes Andy Carroll could have a big part to play on Sunday as he prepares to make his first appearance at St James' Park since leaving for Anfield in January 2011.

He added: "I think everybody loves this fixture. It's live on TV every time Liverpool play Newcastle and I think because it's away it will take the pressure off Liverpool.

"They can express themselves with it being away and from a personal point of view I'd like to see Andy Carroll back in the starting line-up. I know he's missed one or two games but if you are going to play him alongside Suarez then they've got to be given time to develop their understanding.

"There's no better place for Andy Carroll to go back to, his boyhood team and play well.

"It certainly would be nice to get a result there because Newcastle are on a high, they've got some wonderful players like Demba Ba who is scoring goals for fun, and they look like a team that is in the right position."
