'We can't wait for LFC's visit'
After Liverpool announced they will play Tottenham in a pre-season friendly in Baltimore this July, we spoke to the head of sports marketing for the state of Maryland, Terry Hasseltine, to find out what travelling fans can expect from the American city.
After playing Roma in Boston, the Reds will take on Spurs at the M&T Bank Stadium on July 28 as part of their tour of North America presented by Standard Chartered.
Tickets for the game, which will kick off at 1pm local time, are now on pre-sale. Click here for more information>>
And as Terry explains to Liverpoolfc.tv, any Kopites making the journey to Baltimore will be given a warm welcome by excited locals...
Terry, how has Baltimore reacted to the news Liverpool will be playing there this summer?
The atmosphere in Baltimore and the greater Baltimore region is ecstatic. They are truly thrilled about the match. There's been a real buzz on the social media websites and emails back and forth amongst those in the football community - the announcement has made everybody over-the-top excited.
What impact will having Liverpool visit have on Baltimore and Maryland?
I think the impact from a couple of different scopes will be very significant. An English Premier League team like Liverpool coming to Baltimore to play at the M&T Bank Stadium will leave a long, lasting impression on our football community.
Baltimore is a soccer city and destination. In fact, the whole entire state is a soccer destination, and having a football club like Liverpool play in our own state-of-the-art facility that is owned and managed by the state raises our visibility in the international sports world.
The financial impact of fans coming into the city and the state for the night before and the day of the match and spending dollars will be very significant too. It helps our economy and helps us support the event at a higher level. It will have both social and financial impacts to Baltimore and the state of Maryland.
For fans travelling over, what can they expect from Baltimore?
They can expect open arms and a very welcoming community that will embrace the clubs. Our pub and bar scene will be on full alert and very excited for the clubs to play the match! I think you'll see a very spirited crowd in the stadium and when it's all said and done, you'll see a community who will embrace Liverpool and adopt them as their team.
Are fans in Baltimore aware of Liverpool's rich history?
The really neat part about all of this is that people in Baltimore resonate with certain clubs - and Liverpool is one of those clubs because they have such a long tradition, a long history of success and putting quality teams on the pitch.
A lot of our soccer groups in and around the Baltimore area always look to Liverpool as their identification in the soccer world.
Away from the game, what other things are there for people to do in Baltimore?
Baltimore is called the 'Charm City'. It has an historic inner harbour, which is a destination within itself with the shops and the restaurants.
Over in the Fells Point area, there are a lot of historical pubs who have all adopted clubs from around the world. They will be in full gear and ready to roll out the red carpet and hospitality for Liverpool.
In addition to that, we have numerous attractions for the young at heart, for example the science centre and the national aquarium. You can get out onto the inner harbour via the Sea Dog, which is a high-speed boat which can take you from 0-60mph in seconds.
I think people will notice everything around the city of Baltimore is walkable, so you'll be able to walk to the attractions, restaurants, pubs and the stadium from your hotel, and you'll feel engaged for every minute you're here.
As I said earlier, our arms will be wide open to welcome the fans and friends of Liverpool.
It's great that Liverpool's opponents will be Tottenham, another big name in the Premier League...
I think that's what takes this to a whole new level. The fact you have two English Premier League teams playing each other on the pitch in a city like Baltimore just raises the level and profile of the match and of Baltimore.
A lot of clubs travel over to the United States every so often, but they're always playing an opponent from another country or from the MLS here in America.
But to have two English Premier League teams, two who are both highly ranked brings a certain cachet to the match.
On a personal level, as the head of sports marketing for the state of Maryland, how excited are you by Liverpool's visit?
I'm on cloud nine - I couldn't ask for more. This is an opportunity in my role to say to my counterparts across the United States, 'We've got the best of the best' coming to the state of Maryland and the city of Baltimore to play a match.
It makes my job easy because Liverpool are just a natural tradition that are coming to our city to play. I'm really excited and I'm looking forward to trying to help make this an event that people will remember for a long, long time.
