Trio talk tactics at SALT
Academy stars Nacho, Kristoffer Peterson and Joao Carlos Teixeira paid a visit to Sport Art Learning and Training (SALT) college to talk tactics, pose for photos and chat to youngsters.
Nacho offered an insight into his pre-match rituals and gave members of the SALT Football Development program some crucial tips. Peterson spoke about the importance of becoming tactically aware as a player while Teixeira stressed playing with intelligence.
And it looked as though the visitors had the magic touch as SALT's footballers went on to beat Barnsley College 4-3 to secure themselves a place in the National College Cup Final in London on May 2.
SALT is for people aged between 14 and 19 and has centres in Halton and Knowsley where youngsters from across Merseyside can take advantage of a different approach to secondary education.
"It's fantastic for the players to come and see what is going on with local lads," said SALT director David MacDiarmid. "These lads here have not been able to make it as professionals but are still aspiring to make a career in football through playing and coaching which will prevent them becoming NEET (Not in Employment, Education or Training).
"It's given the squad a real lift to meet them."
SALT's Football Development program was the brainchild of LFC Academy elite coach David Rowe who recognised the importance of engaging local youngsters in something that would make a difference to their lives and prevent them becoming NEET.
Tom Culshaw, who manages the SALT squad, is an LFC Academy elite coach, former LFC Reserve team captain and Lilleshall graduate.
He also played alongside the likes of Jamie Carragher, Steven Gerrard and Michael Owen in his younger years.
He said: "The course provides a great opportunity for the SALT lads to make a career out of football, I wish I had these courses when I finished at LFC."
Academy starlet Nacho was quizzed by the lads on what he would do if he was not a professional footballer.
The Spaniard replied enthusiastically: "I would do the same as you: play to the best of my level and become a coach."
The squad have achieved 100 per cent pass rates in their qualifications, gaining apprenticeships and semi-professional trials at local clubs and are top of the North West British College League.
Some 150 people turned out for the SALT open trials on Sefton Park in July 2011 from which 20 were selected. They are recruiting again in July 2012 and if you are 16-18 years of age call 0151 708 5062 to get involved.
