The view from Villa Park
Ahead of Aston Villa's trip to Anfield on Saturday we took time out to chat with Villa fan James Laishley.
How are Villa fans feeling about a trip to Anfield?
Speaking for most Villa fans, I don't feel confident going into any game at the moment. This is no different. We're on an awful run. We have so many injuries to key players at the moment (Bent, Petrov, Dunne, NZogbia) that we're struggling to get points anywhere and playing against one of the bigger clubs is another intimidating prospect.
Villa are currently 15th in the league. Is this a fair reflection of your season so far?
Yes it is. We've played badly, we haven't created enough chances and the style of football has been some of the worst I've seen in years. So yes, it is a fair reflection. We thought we had it bad last season under Houllier but things have gone from bad to worse. It's been our worst season since David O'Leary's final year in charge and our lack of ambition and quality is worrying.
What's the reaction been at Villa Park to the sad news about Stiliyan Petrov?
The news about Stiliyan was shocking. Everybody associated, not only with Villa, but with football is behind him and hope that he recovers. Last week against Chelsea everybody in the gorund stood and applauded in the 19th minute (Petrov's shirt number) and he was moved. It puts football into perspective and the turmoils at Villa Park currently seem so minor in comparison to what Stiliyan is going through.
Is his name one of the chants we should expect to hear from the away end on Saturday?
Yes, I have no doubts we'll be chanting his name throughout the game. I'm sure the Liverpool fans will be as respectful as the Chelsea fans were and maybe join in. Aside from Petrov, expect chants for Agbonlahor, Heskey and Paul McGrath.
Villa players we should be worried about?
Stephen Ireland is the first player that springs to mind. Recently he's tucked in just behind the striker and he's starting to recapture the form we saw him in at Man City a few seasons ago. He's been playing his best since joining Villa and I hope our April Player of the Month can continue his good form. Agbonlahor will be a threat and should cause your defenders some problems and Shay Given should keep us in the game at the back.
One Liverpool player you would rather see wearing a Villa shirt on Saturday?
Jose Enrique. He's been a quality signing for Liverpool and a player Villa could do with. We've not had the best of luck with our full-backs and Enrique has been solid. He's decent defensively and not half bad going forward too.
What’s the best and worse thing about being a Villa fan?
The best thing is supporting a big club with a rich history. However, this also leads to the worst thing about being a Villa fan which is high expectation and disappointment.
Best way to beat Villa?
Between you and me, our full-backs have been awful this season. Attacking down the wings is probably Liverpool's best bet. Making use of Downing and Kuyt and whipping balls in for Carroll and Suarez would be a useful way to attack us.
Prediction?
Liverpool 1 -0 Aston Villa
