LFC coaches at RAF Akrotiri
Liverpool FC community coaches made the 2,200 mile trip to RAF Akrotiri in Cyprus to offer coaching classes to children of servicemen and women.
The base is home to members of the Armed Forces and their families who are either serving in Afghanistan or are about to travel out for service.
Any British forces bound for Afghanistan will fly to Cyprus first, where they will be de-briefed before continuing on to their stations in the Middle East. Troops coming back from action will undergo the same process.
On Saturday LFC coaches flew out to Akrotiri and arrived at 10.00pm local time. Over the next three days, they held football classes for children at the base aged between eight and 16.
The coaching was carried out in a similar fashion to all Liverpool FC community events held here in England and on the Sunday, Monday and Tuesday the 75 children were split into four age groups for their sessions.
On the last day, the participants were rewarded with special prizes. Liverpool first team photos and signed pictures of Reds stars Steven Gerrard, Andy Carroll and Luis Suarez were presented to the kids as well a Liverpool FC football.
Forbes Duff, LFC community coach, said: "It was a great opportunity for us to come out to Cyprus and the RAF base and show our support to our fans there. It was also important that we were able to show our support for our troops and their families.
"It may have only been for a short time but it was good for us to coach them and help take their minds off things. We have a lot of fans on a global scale and lots of Liverpool fans serve in the Armed Forces, so it was great to be able to give back to them."
Helen Meenan, whose husband will soon travel to Afghanistan, wrote to Liverpool FC to thank them for the coaching and support they gave her son during the days they were at RAF Akrotiri.
"I just wanted to say a big thank you to LFC for running the soccer school at RAF Akrotiri," wrote Helen. "My 10-year-old absolutely adores Liverpool FC and he has been so excited and had a fantastic time.
"His dad is shortly going to Afghanistan for six months and the past few days with your coaches has taken his mind off what is to come. He is now asking if they will be back next year.
"Please pass on my thanks to everyone who helped make this happen and the guys who actually came over, I hope they enjoyed their time with us."
