Downing: We deserved to win
Stewart Downing believes Liverpool were worthy of more than a point after they were held to a 1-1 draw by Aston Villa at Anfield on Saturday.
Luis Suarez headed an equaliser with eight minutes remaining to cancel out Chris Herd's early first-half opener, but the Reds' attempts to collect all three points were thwarted by the woodwork and an impressive display from visiting goalkeeper Shay Given.
"I thought we deserved to win - we created a lot of chances, but we didn't finish them off," Downing told Liverpoolfc.tv.
"They took the lead and made it difficult for us. They were probably delighted with the draw, but we've stopped the losing run so that's a positive.
"Villa defended very well, but we dominated the second half and created a lot of chances. But we were disappointed we didn't start the game well enough. Villa took the lead and that gave them confidence.
"We've got to keep getting people in the box and keep creating chances and hopefully it will turn for us."
Both Suarez and Dirk Kuyt were left holding their heads in their hands after seeing efforts rebound against the post, while the duo also had penalty appeals waved away by referee Michael Oliver.
Downing added: "We hit the woodwork and had two great chances with Dirk.
"It's frustrating, but it's good we got the draw because it looked as though we might lose the game at one point.
"It didn't look like it was going to be our day again, but credit to the lads, they kept going, the fans stayed with us and we got a draw."
Having finished so strongly against Villa, Downing is hoping Liverpool can continue in similar fashion right from the off at Ewood Park on Tuesday.
"It has to be a case of picking up where we left off (against Villa)," continued the England winger.
"We have to keep drumming the same message into ourselves - keep being positive, keep creating chances and it will fall for us in the end.
"Obviously you can't keep going on a run like this where we keep missing chances. It will turn and hopefully at Blackburn we will get three points."
Liverpool's trip to Blackburn will be their final outing before the FA Cup semi-final with Everton.
Downing acknowledges heading to Wembley on the back of a win would provide the Reds with a boost.
"It would be nice to get a win before the semi-final," he said.
"Form goes out of the window for a semi-final, but I still think you need to go into it with a bit of form and players who are playing with good confidence.
"We've got a big game (at Blackburn) to prepare for it and it's a big week for the club."
