The team, led by Dominic Williams, set-off from Hillsborough on Friday, where they laid a wreath of flowers at the foot of the goalposts at the Leppings Lane End of the stadium.

From there they ran 30 miles to Hyde and their aim was to arrive at Widnes this evening. The group of six runners and their supporting team will then depart for Anfield tomorrow.

Funds raised by the team will be split equally between the Hillsborough Family Support Group and the Hillsborough Justice Campaign.

Dominic, who had the idea after he visited the Liverpool Football Club museum and saw the Hillsborough mosaic, spoke to Liverpoolfc.tv on the morning the run began.

"It's been very emotional this morning," he said. "Some of our lads were at the game that day and they are feeling very emotional. It's affecting us all I think. And for the next few days, we'll just do our best to raise as much awareness and as much money as possible for the 96.

"We've got 30 miles on the first day, 30 miles on the second and then 16 on the last, so we're doing effectively three marathons in three days for the causes.

"My message to the families and the Hillsborough campaigners is that the I hope we are making you proud and I hope we do a good job for you and help get the justice that the families have been seeking for so many years. We're a small part of that but I hope we make a little difference."
