Luis Suarez believes 'calm and intelligence' will win the Wembley derby on Saturday.

Clashes between Everton and Liverpool are renowned for hard tackles and their frenetic pace, but Suarez does not believe the team that displays the most passion will necessarily come out on top.

Asked on Friday if pre-match nerves were already taking hold of him, the 25-year-old told Liverpoolfc.tv: "I like to keep calm and not think too much about it, because these are the types of games where you do get a little bit nervous and you want the kick-off to come around as quickly as possible.

"The best thing is to keep relaxed and then start focusing your mind on match day itself to be 100 per cent ready. It's all about keeping calm and using your intelligence during matches like this.

"The fact that it's against Everton adds that extra spark, with everything that a derby game means to both clubs.

"We need to totally focus and try and play the game at our pace and control the game in the best way we can."

Suarez knew about the Merseyside rivalry before arriving in England, but the intensity did take him unawares at first.

"I knew that the rivalry existed but I didn't know exactly to what extent," he said.

"Fans come up and talk to me all the time, and right now the only thing they want is for us to win the game on Saturday.

"We all know that things haven't turned out so well in the league so it would be a nice way to make all the fans happy by beating Everton in a semi-final and then going back to Wembley for the final."

Meanwhile, Suarez has expressed sympathy for Alexander Doni after his red card against Blackburn resulted in him missing the semi-final through suspension.

He said: "Just before playing at Wembley, something he was really excited about and really up for, it's tough for him.

"For Doni it's terrible luck, he just didn't deserve it. When you think he's not played a minute in the league all season and he's not said a word about it and just got on with things.

"What we've got to do now is rally around him and then do our best on Saturday to dedicate a victory to him."
