Bill Shankly led Liverpool to their first ever FA Cup triumph against Don Revie's Leeds United in 1965.
After overcoming Chelsea in the semi-final, thanks to goals from Peter Thompson and a Willie Stevenson penalty, Ron Yeats and co were ready for glory.
Things started badly for the Reds when Gerry Byrne broke his collarbone, but despite the obvious handicap the tough left-back played a starring role in the victory.
It was Byrne who provided the assist for the opening goal. After some fine approach play from Stevenson, he fed Byrne down the left, and from his pinpoint cross Roger Hunt headed home.
However, Leeds were a determined side under Revie who never gave up and skipper Billy Bremner drew them level with a blistering strike.
Ian St John was to have the last laugh though as he grabbed the winner when he headed home Ian Callaghan's superb delivery to give the Reds the cup.
