Starlets support volleyball event
Two of the Academy's brightest starlets took part in a volleyball coaching session in Wirral as part of the Premier League 4 Sport Scheme.
Woodchurch High School played host to a fantastic exhibition of volleyball and Brad Smith and Kristjan Emilsson showed off their skills as they joined in the fun.
The Premier League 4 Sport scheme aims to introduce four different Olympic sports to youngsters in the region - volleyball, table tennis, badminton and netball.
The initiative hopes to curb the drop-off in young people's participation in sports after leaving secondary school, as well as offering five hours of activities to youngsters as part of the government's 2012 legacy plans.
Gemma Smith, LFC Foundation Premier League 4 Sport coordinator, said: "The LFC Premier League 4 Sport scheme started in 2009 and it has gone from strength to strength.
"The idea behind it is with the Olympics happening this year we are trying to encourage more youngsters to take up sport, and you never know in 10 years' time we might have someone representing their country in a major event.
"Each week roughly we organise 23 sessions across Liverpool and Wirral getting youngsters involved in volleyball, table tennis, netball and badminton.
"We are proud of the volleyball sessions in Wirral led by Alan Bell who does a fantastic job. We have a lot of girls involved but more boys are taking part as well now and that is great.
"Having the lads down from the Academy will help encourage more boys to take part in volleyball."
Alan Bell, coach of Wirral Volleyball Club said: "We are so grateful to Liverpool Football Club for their help and support.
"We have had kids from seven schools across Wirral taking part in our volleyball session and they are all supported by this programme. We help to develop their skills and it's going really well.
"Some of the teams will be representing Liverpool FC in the North-West Championships.
"We have many competitions involved in Wirral and without Liverpool FC's involvement this wouldn't have been possible."
Academy left-back Smith, who scored a few points in an exhibition game added: "It was a great experience to come down and have a game with the youngsters.
"We always try to help the kids out as much as we can and there was some very talented volleyball players out there which was good to see."
Striker Emilsson added: "I have played handball before back in Iceland but this was my first try at volleyball. I enjoyed it and it was good fun."
