It was his first goal of many and the stunning solo effort against Sheffield Wednesday ranks alongside some of the finest goals Steven Gerrard has ever scored.

The 19-year-old grabbed the game by the scruff of the neck, picked the ball up 40 yards from the Anfield road goal and slalomed past two defenders before smashing past Kevin Pressman to make it 3-1 to the Reds.

Gerard Houllier's men had fallen a goal behind against a Wednesday side who, up to that point, had collected six points from a possible 48. Goals from Sami Hyypia, Danny Murphy and David Thompson sealed victory for Liverpool.
