Gerard Houllier grabbed his first victory in sole charge of the Reds and Robbie Fowler fired a hat-trick in a 4-2 win at Aston Villa.

With the joint manager venture over, Houllier gained a vital three points and he had red hot Robbie to thank for it.

With Stan Collymore coming up against the Reds, an alteraction with Steve Harkness led to the Liverpool left-back being stretchered off after just 12 minutes.

Paul Ince and Fowler put the Reds in the driving seat to make it 2-0 inside the opening seven minutes, and although Dion Dublin was a double marksman Houllier's men were always in control thanks to Fowler.

The No.9 added further goals after 58 and 66 minutes to make sure of the victory.
