Adam on his love for Liverpool
Charlie Adam was born and raised in Dundee, began his playing days in Glasgow and spent two years of his life in Blackpool – but the Scot insists he feels right at home after just a year living in Liverpool.
The 26-year-old signed for the Reds in the summer of 2011 following an inspirational season at the heart of a Blackpool side whose determined, expansive style of play delighted Barclays Premier League audiences.
Adam featured prominently as Liverpool secured a return to Wembley for the first time in 16 years in February 2012 before injury cruelly consigned him to the sidelines for the final two months of the 2011-12 campaign.
And the midfielder was full of praise for Liverpool the football club and the city when he answered questions from a group of guests who were invited by Premier League sponsors Barclays to take part in 'An Audience with Charlie Adam' at Melwood last week.
"I love this city," declared Adam. "The Liverpool people are similar to Scottish people in so many ways. They're so warm and welcoming.
"The fans in the city and the people at this club have made me feel welcome and have made it easy for me. When you move to a big club, you are overawed at first but the staff make it easy for you.
"They've been great so far and I've thoroughly enjoyed my time here. You get a lot of fans coming up to you in the street and in the city, wanting to have autographs and pictures taken with you. And, to be honest, if they weren't asking for that, as a player, you'd be worried!
"I like to eat in the restaurants and do a bit of shopping. I enjoy being around the place. The weather is not great in this country anyway so we just need a bit of sunshine.
"It's been great - it's been very easy to settle in and I think that's shown on the pitch. Hopefully it can continue for a long time. The highlight of my career was signing that contract and since day one I've loved it."
Adam pinpoints Liverpool's trip to the Far East as the moment when the sheer scale of the club dawned on him.
The Reds have fantastic backing in that part of the world as has been emphasised throughout hugely successful and extremely well-supported pre-season tours to the Far East in recent years.
"When you come to the club, you realise that it's a big club but when we went to the Far East tour last summer it was just incredible," insisted Adam. "The turn-out for the games and the training was just unbelievable and that just shows the type of club you are at.
"The fans were camped outside the hotel for the whole night and it was just incredible but when you come to a club like this you've just got to expect it because we've got some of the best players in the world in our dressing room.
"And everybody wants a piece of them, so that just shows how much this club is respected not just in Britain but around the world and it's an honour to be able to play for them."
