Roy Evans started his first full season as Liverpool boss in perfect style as his side took Crystal Palace to the cleaners at Selhurst Park.

Jan Molby fired the Reds in front from the penalty spot after Rob Jones had been impeded in the penalty area.

The Great Dane then played a sublime first time pass to set Steve McManaman on his way down the left wing. The winger then cut inside and curled home an unstoppable drive from the edge of the box.

Robbie Fowler ran through to make it 3-0 on the stroke of half-time as a rampant Reds showed the Eagles no mercy.

Chris Armstrong headed Palace back into the game on 49 minutes but two more from Ian Rush and another McManaman effort put the seal on a 6-1 win.
