Nottingham Forest had been famously dismantled and hit for five at Anfield before.

Ten years on from the thrashing handed out by Barnes, Beardsley, Aldridge and co., it was Michael Owen who single-handedly destroyed Dave Bassett's Forest as the 18-year-old netted four goals in a rout.

Karl-Heinz Riedle played him in on goal after 10 minutes and the young striker opened his body to whip the ball past Dave Beasant for 1-0. Dougie Freedman silenced Anfield with a 17th minute equaliser; however, within  five minutes Steve McManaman restored Liverpool's lead.

On 38 minutes Owen was back on the ball having drifted into a seemingly innocuous position to the left of the Forest defence. Without warning, in the same way he did for his first goal, he peeled away from the last defender before sliding the ball past the 'keeper for 3-1.

A 71 minute penalty completed his hat-trick before Owen clinched a fourth at the second time of asking in front of the Kop.
