Robbie Fowler struck twice in the space of six minutes as England boss Terry Venables, who had controversially omitted Fowler from his national squad that week, looked on from the stands at Anfield.
Neil Ruddock opened the scoring before Leeds were reduced to ten men. Gary Kelly was dismissed for bringing down Rob Jones in the area and the Reds' were awarded their first penalty in 40 games. Fowler stepped up to convert from 12 yards.
The Toxteth-born striker doubled his tally on 68 minutes before fine strikes from Stan Collymore and Neil Ruddock sealed a rout for the home side and kept Liverpool hot on the heels of league leaders Newcastle.
